UHI Students Honoured at Graduation and Celebration Ceremony

UHI Outer Hebrides students celebrated their academic achievements with friends, family, and staff at a celebration of their success on Wednesday.

The graduates celebrated success in a range of higher education qualifications including Higher National Certificates, Higher National Diplomas, Degrees and Postgraduate programmes.

The graduation and celebration ceremony was even more special, as it marked the last as UHI Outer Hebrides, as the college now looks to the future as UHI North, West and Hebrides, with its official launch in September.

Guest speaker at the event was Malcolm Burr, Chief Executive of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, and an independent member of UHI Court. As well as congratulating students on their achievements, Mr Burr also highlighted the growing potential of living and learning in the Outer Hebrides. He noted the importance and growth of renewables, sustainability, and Gaelic amongst many of the opportunities for people looking to study locally, train or upskill.

Lydia Rohmer, Principal of UHI North, West and Hebrides, said: “It gives me great pleasure to attend my first graduation ceremony in the Outer Hebrides and to congratulate the students on their success and achievements. The celebration marks the end of their student journey with us, for now, however, it is the start of an exciting chapter for our graduates. The Outer Hebrides are at the forefront of energy transition and Gaelic language learning, heritage, culture, music, and dance, with huge potential for people who want to live, work and study in our beautiful islands. I look forward to building on that potential as we develop our new college.”

Hannah Ritchie-Muir, Principal and Chief Executive of UHI Outer Hebrides in 2022/2023, said: “Today has been a celebration of the huge achievement of all our students. Their hard work and efforts have led them to this special day and our staff are so proud of them. With passion and determination you can achieve anything and we hope your time with us opens up many exciting doors of opportunities.”

The celebration in Martin’s Memorial Church was followed by a reception at the Stornoway campus.
