e-Sgoil SQA Gaelic results 2022-23
e-Sgoil has recorded a fantastic set of results for the candidates who sat Gaelic & Gàidhlig SQA courses in 2022-23 in partnership with UHI North, West and Hebrides.
60 candidates were presented for both learner and fluent Gaelic courses at N5, Higher & Advanced Higher level, with a pass rate of 97%.
The candidates represented pupils in Scottish schools, as well as adults, who all studied online with the courses being delivered remotely by five e-Sgoil teaching staff.
Making these courses available to pupils in school through online delivery provided the opportunity for Gaelic (Learners) to learn Gaelic when it is not available in their own school. e-Sgoil teachers were also able to support a learner in Shetland who had moved to the area from a Gaelic Medium school to allow them to continue their GM journey in an area without provision. Furthermore, the Higher Gàidhlig class brought together pupils from four different schools who would have otherwise been learning in isolation.
Of the adults who started in August 2023 these included 20 employed in the Education sector, many of whom hope to use their language skills with pupils going forward.
Speaking about the results, e-Sgoil Gaelic DHT Laura Howitt said “The success of our candidates shows the success of this way of learning. Students from across Scotland learn together to create a viable class of learners, using technology as their means of learning and communication. It’s delightful to see so many young people and adult learners gaining this opportunity which wouldn’t happen without the digital landscape.”
Hannah Ritchie-Muir, Vice Principal - Academic for UHI North, West and Hebrides added “We are incredibly proud of all the students on the Gaelic courses at N5, Higher & Advanced Higher delivered by e-Sgoil and UHI North, West and Hebrides. A pass rate of 97% demonstrates how successful our partnership with e-Sgoil has been in delivering Gaelic throughout Scotland.”
Looking ahead to the 2023-24 academic session,registrations for the Higher course include a large number of students continuing from N5.
It has been great to hear of families learning together – a father is registered this year to learn alongside his son, with another of his children having completed the course last year. In addition, a husband and wife learned together in 2022-2023.
With e-Sgoil delivering the Advanced Higher Gàidhlig course in 2023-24 this will allow Gaelic Medium pupils the chance to learn together at the highest level they can access in school, creating a community of young Gaelic speakers who are spread across three schools.
