Background
I moved to the UK 25 years ago and developed a freelance portfolio that included professional work as photographer, researcher and editor in adventure travel publishing. I have wide teaching experience at FE and HE levels and held a senior position as Curriculum Leader at The Open College of the Arts/University for the Creative Arts. I hold an MA Documentary Photography and PG Cert in Environmental Anthropology.
I have travelled in remote environments such as Iceland, Alaska, Lapland, The Thar Desert, the Sahel, Namibia, North Africa and Guyana, where I was expedition photographer for Raleigh International. I hold the International Mountain Leader and the Winter Mountain Leader qualifications and have led treks and trips in Iceland, Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and the mountains of Corsica.
I won a Millennium Commission Award for a photography & cycling project in Mali and a Wilderness Award for a cycling expedition across the Andes and the Bolivian Altiplano. I have worked on ethnographic projects in the Outer Hebrides and Spain and collaborated with the international development charity Tree Aid in Burkina Faso and Ghana.
My key areas of academic interest are Ethnographic Landscapes, Embodiment and the Ecology of Perception, and Visual Ethnography. Current professional development includes extending my ethnographic filmmaking skills.
Teaching Responsibilities
Modules on Anthropology, Leadership and Expeditions at SCQF Level 9, as well as Dissertation and Professional Project supervision at SCQF Level 10.
