Course: BA (Hons) Equine Business Management

Originally from Portugal, Julian Agnello has worked with horses since the age of eight. Seeking a new adventure, he moved to the north of Scotland to study Equine Business Management at UHI North, West and Hebrides. "The experience was very different—especially the weather!" Julian joked.

Julian spent the first year of his studies in Thurso, and despite moving south during the pandemic, he continued to attend practical classes at the Rural Studies Centre in blocks throughout his studies. He also balanced online learning with full-time work at the Talland School of Equitation in Cirencester, under the guidance of Olympic trainer Pammy Hutton. "It was great because everything I was learning online related directly to what I was doing at work," Julian explained. His role involved riding and caring for horses, helping to prepare them for competitions, and gaining hands-on experience in the equestrian field. Though it was hard work, Julian says it helped him grow professionally.

Reflecting on his time at UHI North, West and Hebrides Julian describes the experience as eye-opening. "It really helped me develop my communication and people skills—it was a big step forward," he said.

Now, Julian plans to go freelance, start his own business, and continue competing, as well as teaching. "I’m excited to see where the world takes me." His passion for horses remains a driving force for his career. “"The bond you build with a horse - it's about partnership and harmony. They don’t speak our language, but they become your best friend."
