About...
This course would be of interest to students wanting to work in the land based industry or working with animals; progressing onto game keeping, equestrian and veterinary care. You will study a range of subjects related to the Land Use Industry, for example estate maintenance, animal husbandry, animal handling and work on your employability skills. This course is designed as a taster type course for anyone who think they may be interested in a career in the land-based sector, regardless of your level of study at school.

Course content...
You will study:
Estate Maintenance: An Introduction (National 4) (1 credit) This unit will be suitable for learners who have limited or no knowledge of the craft practices in estate maintenance.
Land-based Industries: An Introduction (National 4) (1 credit) This unit is designed to allow the learner to explore the very diverse nature of industries that exist in the land-based sector.
Employability Skills for Land-based Industries (National 4) (0.5 credit) This unit is designed to be integrated into practical tasks undertaken as part of this course.
Optional units
Animal Husbandry: An Introduction (National 4) (1 credit) This unit allows learners to develop some of the basic skills and knowledge required to contribute towards the health and wellbeing of animals in a work setting.
Animal Handling: An Introduction (National 4) (0.5 credit) This unit allows learners to develop some of the basic knowledge and skills required to handle animals in a work setting.
Crop Production: An Introduction (National 4) (1 credit) This unit allows learners to develop some of the basic skills and knowledge required to contribute towards the production of plants in a work setting.
Soft Landscaping: An Introduction (National 4) (0.5 credit) This unit allows learners to develop some of the basic knowledge and skills required for soft landscaping.
Where you can go...
On completion, opportunities to progress to study in the subject area of game keeping, equestrian and veterinary care may be available at UHI North, West and Hebrides. This will be dependent on having the suitable entry qualifications.
Entry requirements
You should be working at or towards National 4, demonstrate an interest in working within the rural skills sector (land based or an interest in working with animals) and have a satisfactory reference.
