UHI School of Adventure Studies students raise the profile of athlete training in adventure sport during the Fort William Mountain Festival
As part of the Fort William Mountain Festival, students and lecturers from the BSc (Hons) Adventure Performance and Coaching programme at the UHI School of Adventure Studies (SOAS) hosted a free event designed for athletes training in adventure sport on the opening night of the Festival.
The event was open to anyone keen on having a personalised movement analysis prepared for them to apply to their personal coaching and training regime.
Participants on the night were able to test their trunk strength endurance, lower body strength and mobility, upper body strength and dynamic movement through a series of activities that were evaluated by students.
Tom Smale who leads the Adventure Performance and Coaching degree programme based in Fort William said: “We were really pleased that this pilot event was so well attended and that we could contribute to the success of the Mountain Festival by adding another element to the programme. We are grateful to our partners at the Festival for helping to promote the event and for their assistance on the night. We are now very busy evaluating our learnings from participants’ comments and will apply them to future events.”
The School of Adventure Studies sponsored the Scottish Youth Award for Excellence in Mountain Culture which was presented during the Mountain Festival’s celebrations at the Nevis Centre. Hannah Smith received her trophy from Principal and Chief Executive of UHI North, West and Hebrides, Lydia Rohmer, who commented that Hannah was “an exceptional young woman whose determination and resilience to pursue her passion mirrored the qualities we seek to instil in our own students at the School of Adventure Studies.”
The next big event for students and staff in Fort William will be their Open Day on Friday March 21st. Prospective students and their families are expected from all over the UK and they will be able to meet lecturers, tour the student accommodation, get a flavour of what studying in Fort William is like, and discover what exciting and rewarding career opportunities can come from studying at the School of Adventure Studies. Anyone can come along – just get in touch to book your place. Events
