Social Services and Healthcare SCQF 7 (Work-based) SVQ
What is special about this course?
This flexible work-based qualification which is accredited by SQA, aims to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills that are required to work successfully with the older adult. Course material will be covered in the workplace through practise, observation and the creation of a portfolio. In addition to work, time will be spent with open learning materials while receiving support from your tutor/assessor.
Entry requirements
Social Services & Health Care SVQ 2. Alternatively it is recommended that candidates have a minimum of 3 Standard Grades or National 4s, one of which should be English. However, mature candidates with considerable experience in the sector will also be considered. You must be in full employment and working with older adults on a regular basis.
The aim of this course is to credit you for competencies gained in the workplace and it will allow you to register as a practitioner with the Scottish Social Services Council. You will cover 4 mandatory and 4 optional units.
The mandatory units are:
- Promote effective communication.
- Promote health, safety and security in the work setting.
- Develop your practice through reflection and learning.
- Promote the safeguarding of individuals.
4 optional are chosen from a selection to suit work placement
To be eligible, you must be working in the health and social care sector.
This is a work based qualification with assessments being carried out at work with approximately 2 hours attendance at college required each week.

You could continue to gain higher qualifications at work with Social Services & Health Care SVQ level 4 or consider study at degree level with the University of the Highlands and Islands or other institutions.
