Hairdressing SCQF 5 (Thurso) SVQ
What is special about this course?
The SVQ Hairdressing SCQF 5 course offers prospective students the opportunity to develop hands-on, practical skills in various aspects of hairstyling, including cutting, colouring, styling and client consultation.
The course is designed to provide a solid foundation in hairdressing, while also focusing on professionalism, customer service, and staying current with industry trends. Students will gain invaluable practical experience by being a part of our commercial training salon, House of Morven.
Entry requirements
- Two National 5 and three National 4 qualifications (five Standard Grades at Level 3 or above)
- Candidates who do not have the above requirements but who have successfully completed Access to Service Industries course or an SVQ Level 1 in Beauty Therapy or Hairdressing will be considered.
- Work experience in a hair salon will be an advantage
Please note that applying for this course does not guarantee a Modern Apprenticeship place, your application will be discussed with you in the first instance.
- Consult, assess, plan and prepare for hair, barbering, beauty, nails, wellbeing and holistic services
- Implement and maintain safe, hygienic and effective working practices
- Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
- Set, style and dress hair
- Colour and lighten the hair
- Cut and clipper hair using hairdressing techniques
- Dry, style and finish hair using hairdressing techniques
- Braid, twist and thread wrap hair
- Provide basic business support and services
How will I study my course?
- Full Time
- Day release
Attendance for the full-time course is over one academic session, if attending on a day-release basis this will take two academic years.
Blended delivery - Students will carry out practical learning in our commercial salon and will complete some theory elements of the course online through our Virtual Learning Environment.

What can I do on completion of my course?
Upon successful completion of the course, students can pursue employment opportunities as a junior stylist or progress on to the SVQ Hairdressing SCQF 6 to further advance their skills.
A hairdressing qualification can lead to various exciting career opportunities such as a hair stylist, colour technician, salon manager, freelance stylist, educator or trainer, product sales representative, fashion or editorial stylist, or even opening your own salon.
