What is special about this course?

This Modern Apprenticeship allows learners to achieve an SVQ in Hairdressing at SCQF level 5 while working in a salon. The Modern Apprenticeship route is a combination of work-based and college training, providing the dual benefit of gaining a nationally recognised qualification while earning a wage. The aim is to develop the fundamental hairdressing and barbering skills needed to work as a trainee or junior on the salon/shop floor.

Apprentices will gain the opportunity to develop hands-on, practical skills in various aspects of hairstyling, including cutting, colouring, styling, and client consultation. The course is designed to provide a solid foundation in hairdressing while also focusing on professionalism, customer service, and staying current with industry trends.

Entry requirements

  • You must be in full-time employment with employer support to undertake the course.
  • Two National 5 and three National 4 qualifications (five Standard Grades at Level 3 or above)
  • Candidates who do not have the above requirements but who have successfully completed the Access to Service Industries course or an SVQ Level 1 in Beauty Therapy or Hairdressing will be considered.
  • Work experience in a hair salon will be an advantage

This Modern Apprenticeship consists of an SVQ, Core Skills, and Enhancements. The framework is developed by Habia, the Hair and Beauty Industry Authority, and includes a combination of units that must be completed to achieve the qualification. These will be discussed with you prior to starting your apprenticeship.

Key topics include:

  • Consult, assess, plan, and prepare for hair, barbering, beauty, nails, wellbeing, and holistic services
  • Implement and maintain safe, hygienic, and effective working practices
  • Shampoo, condition, and treat the hair and scalp
  • Set, style, and dress hair
  • Colour and lighten the hair
  • Cut and clipper hair using hairdressing techniques
  • Dry, style, and finish hair using hairdressing techniques
  • Braid, twist, and thread wrap hair
  • Provide basic business support and services

Additionally, the Modern Apprenticeship includes core skills in:

  • Communication
  • Working with others
  • Problem-solving
  • Information and communication technology
  • Numeracy

How will I study my course?

As a Modern Apprentice, you will learn in the college salon and also gain hands-on experience in the workplace. Your progress will be supported through our online learning platform, where you'll submit evidence of your achievements as part of your portfolio. A designated assessor will visit your workplace to conduct reviews and observations, ensuring you stay on track.

How long will my course last?

It is expected that apprentices following this apprenticeship will take up to 24 months to complete.
