What is special about this course?

The MA Health and Wellbeing is designed to meet the career development needs of health and social care professionals in the UK.

The course will increase your awareness of the social, technological, economic, political and environmental changes taking place within health and social care, whether in the public, private or voluntary sectors, enabling you to take your career to the next stage.

You will study core modules in the development of local, national and international health and social care policy, the influence of sociology, psychology and ethics on our understanding of health and wellbeing, the issues of health and social care provision in remote and rural areas as well as gaining skills in research methods.

You will study part time through fully-supported online learning, with lectures, tutorials and other materials accessible via the university’s virtual learning environment (VLE).  You will receive regular support from your tutors and peers via online discussions, telephone and email; whichever suits you best.

Entry requirements

  • 2:1 honours degree, or equivalent OR 
  • Postgraduate diploma award or a professional qualification recognised as being equivalent to an honours degree
  • Applicants with a 2:2 honours degree or below, an ordinary degree or DipHE in a relevant subject, plus relevant professional experience may also be considered through successful completion of the admissions essay
  • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and/or Accreditation of Prior Certificated Learning (APCL) may also be considered
  • All students should be in employment and/or engaged in voluntary activities

MA

To achieve the award of MA Health and Wellbeing you must complete either a systematic review or a service evaluation for dissertation.

How will I study my course?

  • Part-time (structured) – 60 credits in an academic year
  • Part-time (unstructured) – less than 60 credits in an academic year
  • You will study through supported online learning using the university's virtual learning environment (VLE)
  • You will have the opportunity to meet fellow students and staff by attending the online virtual induction, usually held in late August. This is a half day event, and we strongly recommend that all new students attend
  • Assessment is varied and includes online multiple-choice questions, reflective portfolio, discussion board contributions, essays and reports, case study analysis, collaborative project, electronic and poster presentations, critique of a journal paper, research proposal and dissertation

    How long will my course last?

    • Part-time (structured) (MA): 3 years @ 20-30 hours per week
    • Part-time (unstructured) (MA): 6 years @ 10-15 hours per week

    The number of hours per week indicates the total number of hours you should dedicate to the course, which includes time spent in discussion with tutors and your own time spent on individual study and research.

    EU/EEA and Swiss nationals without settled or pre-settled status in the UK

    Following the UK’s departure from the European Union, the Scottish Government confirmed that EU/EEA and Swiss nationals, who do not have settled or pre-settled status, will be considered as international for fee purposes. These students will get an automatic fee scholarship.

    This includes EEA/Swiss nationals with pre-settled status who are not self-employed or migrant workers in the UK.

    This course is not available to international students requiring Student Route visa sponsorship to study in the UK.

    A no fee increase guarantee is available for self-funding full-time and structured part-time rest of the UK, EU and international postgraduate students for continuous study for the same award, up to the permitted standard time limit for the relevant award.

    Funding

    Eligible Scotland-domiciled students studying part-time can apply for a tuition fee loan from SAAS. You must be intending to complete the course in no longer than twice the length of time it would take for a full-time student. For example, if your course is available to full-time students as a one-year programme, you will be funded for a maximum of two years' part-time study. If your course does not have a full-time option, you must complete within three years. You can apply for a tuition fee loan up to £7,000, which will be paid pro-rata for each academic year of study.

    Students from the rest of the UK who meet the eligibility requirements may be able to apply for a loan from the Student Loan Company.

    What can I do on completion of my course?

    Once you have completed your MA Health and Wellbeing course, NHS staff currently on bands 5 and 6 of the NHS Career Framework Ladder can progress to bands 7 and 8.

    Completion of this course will also lead to enhanced employment opportunities.

    Can I progress into further study?

    Progression to PhD study may be possible.

    I was interested in the conceptual relationship between how people perceive their health and wellbeing and how that translates into what we end up producing as an NHS, and how we provide that. I wanted to gain a better theotroical understand of the underpinnings behind people’s thoughts and feelings about their health and how that interacts with communities, and leads up to the development of the NHS.  

    I was looking for an online course, and something that would allow me to keep working while studying. The highlights have been the interactions with different lecturers with a broad spectrum of specialties and the discussion with other students from across the world, so we could have a wide ranging conversation which I found really interesting. I found the program leader incredibly helpful, she allowed me to think wider and push the boundaries of where I was trying to go.  

    Chris studied the MA Health and Wellbeing at UHI North, West and Hebrides. 

    I have been able to use my creativity in a research context and find connections. You engage with the literature and assert independent thought, and while you draw on theories in the provided materials, you do have license to have independent thought and argument, presenting different arguments. The highlight has been having the scope to research what I’m passionate about.  

    I’ve been able to progress academically while growing my business, and still being hands on in therapeutic modalities. I have a strong professional relationship with my mentor, the programme leader, which has been really helpful. I’ve been able to draw on her professional advice, even though I was studying remotely.

    I have a very positive working relationship with my Course leader, who is approachable and very understanding. I know I can email her at any time and will be responded to- the lecturers are encouraging and really want you to achieve your goals.  

    I appreciate the opportunities of attending my local UHI campus, being able to loan books from alternative UHI libraries and return them without occurring costs. The UHI campuses are all connected and have a real sense of unity.
