Mandy Dailly tells us how studying a degree in Scottish History and Archeology at our Kinlochleven Cerntre changed her life for the good.

Mature female student studying board at an archaeological dig

I began an undergraduate degree in Scottish History and Archaeology with UHI. I was really nervous and didn’t really believe I was ‘clever enough’ to succeed. I was a mature student, a mum of three, and had left school at 16 with no Higher qualifications. If it hadn’t been for the support I received from module tutors and the fantastic Clare Slinger at the Kinlochleven Learning Centre I would definitely not have made it to the end.

Instead, what happened was that I achieved far more than I could ever have hoped. In the summer after second year, I attended a two-week archaeology field school at the Ness of Brodgar in Orkney. It was amazing! Experiencing a real dig added a whole new dimension to the theory I had been learning. At the end of that fortnight, I decided that as much as I loved history, I’d found my passion in Archaeology, and I switched to a single honours degree in my third year.

Studying with UHI was the best thing I’ve ever done. The online facilities which make a wide variety of courses available to people in rural areas, allowed me to discover a subject I love, and the fantastic staff supported me throughout. It gave me confidence in my own abilities and the opportunity to change our lives, undoubtedly for the better.

I’d absolutely urge anyone thinking about studying to go for it. I can’t tell you it’s easy, but it’s definitely worthwhile. Thank you, UHI West Highland!
