The Barra Learning Centre has helped me be able to progress with my career at sea by providing me with the foundations needed to start a career at sea. The tutors are very good at getting the information across to students and have a great wealth of knowledge that helps the students find it easier to progress through the ranks.
Nothing is ever a problem to anyone who works in the Barra Learning Centre and will do everything they can to help, it’s been a credit to the community of Barra.
I started working at sea in 2014 and have travelled the world and seen some fabulous places and got paid to do it.
I have worked in many different sectors; royal fleet auxiliary, stand by for rigs, ferries, and windfarms, to name just a few. I also volunteered for Barra Lifeboat Station, and I am now currently volunteering for Portrush Lifeboat in Northern Ireland.
I studied for my yacht master offshore coc stcw commercial endorsement a few years ago and everything in that course was covered by the seamanship classes I took when I was in school at the centre, which made the course easier to pass and that was 10 plus years since I first learnt anything to do with tides, chartwork colregs etc. It just goes to show, all that information I learnt all those years ago in Barra Learning Centre stuck and still helping me to this day.
